Cape Coral sends $596,144 Yacht Club gas proposal back

Cape Coral City Council sent a proposed $596,144 natural-gas extension to Yacht Club Community Park back for more information, leaving approval, funding and construction unresolved.

Resolution 187-26 would authorize a gas service agreement and construction deposit agreement between the city and Peoples Gas System. The proposed line would serve the rebuilt Boathouse restaurant at the Yacht Club, which is being rebuilt by Kearns Restaurant Group.

Why council sent the proposal back

During the July 22, 2026, council meeting, members asked staff to compare the proposed natural-gas extension with a propane system. They also requested more information about whether hazard-mitigation funds could help pay for the work and whether Kearns Restaurant Group could contribute to the infrastructure.

Those questions leave the central public-money issue unresolved: whether Cape Coral should fund utility infrastructure connected to a public park redevelopment that also includes a privately operated restaurant.

The $596,144 figure is a proposed cost tied to the agreements under consideration. It is not an adopted expenditure or confirmed final project price, and no funding source for the extension was established at the reported meeting.

How the city described the gas line

City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn said the line would serve the Boathouse as part of the city’s Yacht Club investment. He also said properties along the line could have the option to connect if they choose to do so and meet utility requirements. The proposal does not guarantee those connections or require nearby property owners to participate.

Officials and council members cited several reasons for considering the extension, including replacing or avoiding propane tanks, addressing resiliency and safety concerns, and creating the possibility of repayment credits if additional customers connect to the system. Those points remain part of the discussion and do not establish that natural gas is categorically safer or more economical than propane.

Part of a larger Yacht Club funding debate

The gas-line question is tied to the broader, phased redevelopment of Yacht Club Community Park. The City of Cape Coral’s project update says Phase 2 includes the fuel system, civil site work and beach amenities, while the city has not yet determined a funding source for the overall project.

The city also says it is prioritizing revenue-generating components such as the Boathouse and docks while evaluating the timing and requirements for other work. That context matters because the gas-extension decision could affect how residents view the balance between public investment, park improvements and private business operations at the site.

What happens next

Staff is expected to return with a cost comparison and additional information about possible funding and private participation before the council considers the resolution again. The timing and outcome of a future vote remain unresolved.

For now, Cape Coral has not committed the $596,144, construction has not been authorized, and the proposed gas main has not been approved. The next council discussion will determine whether the proposal advances, changes or is rejected after the requested information is provided.
