Cape Coral Wins $2.65 Million for Evacuation Route and Police Vehicle
Cape Coral will receive $2.65 million in state funding for two local projects: improvements to NE 24th Avenue, a key corridor and evacuation route, and an emergency-response vehicle for the Cape Coral Police Department.
The City of Cape Coral announced the awards July 1, saying two legislative appropriation requests survived Florida’s veto process. The approved funding includes $2.5 million for NE 24th Avenue and $150,000 for the police vehicle.
The money provides new state support for an evacuation-route corridor and police emergency-response capacity. It is also less than the city originally requested for both projects, and the city’s largest request—for a Utilities Expansion Project—was not approved.
What the funding covers
NE 24th Avenue will receive the largest share of the approved funding, with $2.5 million designated for improvements. The city identifies the avenue as a key corridor and an evacuation route, making the award relevant to both everyday transportation and hurricane emergency planning.
The second appropriation is $150,000 for a Cape Coral Police Department emergency-response vehicle. The funding is intended for that vehicle, but the city’s announcement does not say that it has already been purchased.
Together, the two awards total $2.65 million. The appropriations are partial funding compared with the city’s original requests, rather than confirmation that either project is fully financed.
What was requested but not approved
Cape Coral originally sought $10 million for a Utilities Expansion Project, $5 million for NE 24th Avenue improvements and $300,000 for the police emergency-response vehicle.
The state funding confirmed for NE 24th Avenue is therefore half of the city’s original $5 million request. The police vehicle award represents half of the requested $300,000. The $10 million Utilities Expansion Project request was not approved.
The city said it will continue seeking funding for the Utilities Expansion Project. The announcement did not describe that request as canceled, and it did not provide additional details about the project’s scope or the amount of any future funding request.
Next steps remain unclear
The announcement confirms the appropriations but does not provide a construction start date, project completion date or procurement timetable. That means residents do not yet have a city-backed schedule for when work on NE 24th Avenue could begin or when the police vehicle could be acquired.
