Cape Coral Secures $2.65 Million for Road and Police Projects
Cape Coral will receive $2.65 million in state funding for transportation and public-safety projects after two legislative appropriations survived the state veto process, the city said July 1, 2026.
The larger award provides $2.5 million for improvements to NE 24th Avenue, including work tied to the corridor’s role as an evacuation route. A separate $150,000 appropriation will help the Cape Coral Police Department purchase an emergency-response vehicle.
The awards give the city state support for two local priorities: improvements to a key north-south transportation route and equipment for police emergency response. They do not cover the full amounts Cape Coral originally requested for either project.
Road project receives half of original request
Cape Coral initially sought $5 million for NE 24th Avenue improvements. The $2.5 million appropriation is half of that request.
The city identifies NE 24th Avenue as a key corridor and evacuation route. That makes the funding relevant not only to routine transportation improvements but also to the movement of residents during an emergency.
The appropriation establishes state support for the project, but the city’s announcement does not provide a construction start date or a completion date. It also does not say that work has begun.
The road funding is part of a broader effort to use outside dollars for infrastructure in a city where transportation improvements can involve both everyday travel and emergency evacuation needs. The approved amount is significant, but the difference between the original $5 million request and the $2.5 million award means the state appropriation will not cover the entire amount Cape Coral sought.
Police vehicle award also falls short of request
The city requested $300,000 for a Police Department emergency-response vehicle and received $150,000. Like the road appropriation, the police award is half of the original request.
The funding is intended to support the purchase of an emergency-response vehicle. The city announcement does not identify the vehicle’s specifications, delivery date or procurement schedule.
For the Police Department, the appropriation provides a designated source of state funding for emergency-response equipment. The public announcement does not describe how the vehicle will be deployed or identify any additional local funding connected to the purchase.
Utilities request was not approved
Cape Coral also sought $10 million for its Utilities Expansion Project. That request was not approved as part of the state funding decisions announced by the city.
The city did not announce that the utilities project had been canceled. Instead, city officials said they would continue pursuing future funding opportunities for the Utilities Expansion Project and other priorities.
That leaves the utilities project without the requested $10 million state appropriation while the road and police requests move forward with partial awards. Taken together, the three requests represented an effort to secure outside funding for transportation, emergency response and utility infrastructure.
What happens next
The immediate change is the confirmation of $2.65 million in state appropriations: $2.5 million for NE 24th Avenue and $150,000 for the police emergency-response vehicle. The city’s next identified funding priority is continued pursuit of outside support for the Utilities Expansion Project and other needs.
Implementation details for the road work and vehicle purchase remain to be established publicly. The city has not provided project construction or vehicle-delivery dates in its announcement.
