Dallas furloughs 4,200 city workers as budget gap pressures services

Dallas will require more than 4,200 city employees to take three unpaid furlough days starting Friday, July 10, as officials try to close a roughly $30 million budget gap. The city announced the move on June 30, 2026.

The furloughs are a short-term budget response, not a permanent staffing cut or a final fix. In the city manager’s budget memo, each furlough day is estimated to save about $1.4 million for the General Fund.

Officials said the plan follows earlier cost controls, including a hiring freeze, overtime limits, spending cuts and a pause on non-essential travel.

Who is exempt

Dallas says police, fire, paramedics, 911 workers and some utility and operations staff are exempt. That should protect emergency response and key functions, but the city has not published a detailed department-by-department disruption list.

The other furlough dates are Friday, Sept. 4, and Monday, Sept. 28. For workers, the unpaid days will reduce take-home pay. For residents and business owners, the more immediate question is whether some routine city work takes longer to answer or process on those dates.

What it signals next

The furloughs are another sign that Dallas is still working through budget pressure heading into the next planning cycle. For now, the city is choosing temporary pay cuts for a large share of its workforce instead of deeper immediate reductions in staffing or services.

Residents should expect more budget decisions as the city moves deeper into FY27-FY28 planning this summer and fall.
