Dallas plans road closures around American Airlines Center for September Republican convention
Dallas officials are planning road closures and heightened security around the American Airlines Center and Victory Park for the Republican midterm convention scheduled for September 9-10, 2026.
The broader security operation is expected to run from September 7 through September 11. Houston Street, Victory Avenue and Nowitzki Way are among the roads planned for closure during convention operations, according to information presented by city officials and reported by KERA News.
Security period runs Sept. 7-11
Planned security measures include checkpoints, vehicle barriers and temporary fencing near the arena. Police also expect motorcades, temporary closures and rolling restrictions as security operations require.
Dallas Deputy Police Chief Devon Palk warned that areas outside the main convention zone could also experience short-term closures. Some restrictions may be imposed with little or no notice, so drivers should not assume a route will remain open throughout the day.
The plan was developed with the U.S. Secret Service, FBI, Dallas police, Dallas Fire-Rescue and DART Police. Officials said the most significant traffic effects are expected around the American Airlines Center and Victory Park, rather than across the entire city.
Victory Station scheduled to close Sept. 8-10
DARTโs Victory Station is scheduled to close from September 8 through September 10. Located at 2525 Victory Ave., the station is across from the American Airlines Centerโs west entrance.
Victory Station normally serves DARTโs Green and Orange lines and Trinity Railway Express trains. Riders who use the station for work, commuting or arena events should check DART alerts before traveling and allow extra time for an alternate station or connection.
City discussing security and reimbursement costs
A Dallas Finance Committee agenda item created August 18 and placed on the August 24, 2026, agenda documents city preparation for the convention, including discussions about security and possible reimbursement costs.
KERA reported that security and traffic preparations are estimated to cost the city $1.8 million. Officials have not finalized reimbursement or other funding sources, so the estimate should not be treated as a final net cost to Dallas taxpayers.
What Dallas travelers should do
People traveling to or through Victory Park should avoid the American Airlines Center area during the September 7-11 security period unless the trip is necessary. Drivers should expect planned closures on Houston Street, Victory Avenue and Nowitzki Way during convention operations, along with possible motorcade-related delays.
Build extra time into commutes and event trips, and check the City of Dallas road-traffic updates and DART service alerts before leaving. Final closure times, detours and additional restrictions may change as security needs develop.
