Stockton Unified phone rules now line up with California deadline
Stockton CA – Stockton Unified’s phone policy now aligns with California’s July 1 deadline, with class-time limits, documented exceptions, and step-by-step consequences.
Stockton Unified’s cell phone policy now lines up with California’s Phone-Free Schools Act, which required every school district to adopt a policy limiting or prohibiting smartphone use by July 1, 2026.
The state law still allows phones in emergencies, when danger is perceived, or when a teacher, administrator, doctor, or a student’s individualized education program allows it.
A Stockton Unified school-site example says phones must be turned off and stored in backpacks during class. If a student does not follow the rule, the phone can be moved to a designated storage area in the classroom or office.
The same school-site policy lists documented exceptions for medical needs, health plans, IEPs, 504 plans, and Student Study Team accommodations. It also lays out a step-by-step response for repeated violations, starting with a verbal warning and parent contact and escalating to office storage and other discipline.
For Stockton families, the practical move is simple: check both the district policy and your child’s school rules before the first day back.
