Here’s what Albuquerque residents are waking up to midweek: a big freight-and-jobs play along I-40, a scheduled test at Kirtland that may be heard across town, and a windy, dry stretch that keeps fire weather on the mind.
I-40 Tradeport Corridor: planning work begins in Albuquerque
Local and federal transportation leaders say the first hub in a planned I-40 Tradeport Corridor is now moving into the planning and engineering phase in Albuquerque. The concept is to improve freight movement with new logistics space and fuel infrastructure along the interstate, linking the region more tightly into national shipping routes.
Officials say Albuquerque’s crossroads location on I-40 and I-25 is a key reason the city is slated for multiple hubs, and a county grant will help monitor trucks and corridor conditions with real-time data.
Heads-up at Kirtland: controlled explosives test expected Feb. 26
Sandia National Laboratories says a controlled explosives test is expected Thursday, Feb. 26, on the south side of Kirtland Air Force Base. If weather cooperates, the test window is set for daytime hours, and some neighborhoods may hear a loud boom. Black smoke and dust could also be visible from a distance.
Wind and low humidity: fire-weather risk stays elevated
Forecasters are tracking several days of strong winds, low humidity, and unseasonably warm temperatures. Gusty conditions are expected to linger into Thursday, with the combination of wind and dry air raising wildfire concerns across parts of the state and keeping outdoor burning and spark-producing work especially risky.
Today in the community: free ‘Know Your Rights’ seminar
A free, public seminar on what to do during immigration enforcement encounters is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at the Gateway Center Auditorium, with a virtual option also listed. Organizers say the goal is practical, plain-language guidance for families who want to be prepared and informed.
