City sets hearing on backyard cottages

Altoona City Council has scheduled a public hearing for Monday, February 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall on Venbury Drive to consider updates to the zoning code that would allow accessory dwelling units in several residential districts.

The proposal would add a formal definition of accessory dwelling unit, establish development standards for these small secondary homes, and list them as allowed accessory uses in multiple single family zoning districts, including several R and agricultural classifications. Residents can review the draft language at City Hall and will have a chance to speak for or against the changes during the hearing.

If adopted, the changes would not automatically add new units, but they could gradually make room for options like backyard cottages or garage apartments, offering more flexible housing choices for families, caregivers, and renters over time.

Live music at Prairie Meadows tonight

Prairie Meadows is the busiest place in town this evening, with the band Gut Feeling set to play a free show from 8 to 11 p.m. in the Finish Line Show Lounge. The high energy cover band leans on rock and pop from the 1970s through the 1990s, so expect a lot of familiar sing along material if you head out.

The show is part of a full February lineup at the casino, which also features rock and roll sets from groups like The Weasels, recurring country karaoke nights with a grand prize for top performers, and special racing themed promotions on select Saturdays. Most lounge shows are free to attend, though guests must be at least 21 years old.

Parking and the gaming floor are both likely to be busy around showtime, so give yourself a little extra time if you are meeting friends before the band starts.

Major agribusiness event arrives this week

Starting Tuesday, February 10, the Meadows Events and Conference Center at Prairie Meadows will host the Agribusiness Showcase and Conference, a two day gathering for Iowa’s crop and ag retail industry. The event runs February 10 and 11 and features an exhibit hall, educational breakout sessions, and networking for agribusiness professionals from across the state.

Organizers describe the showcase as a chance to hear directly from national speakers, connect with manufacturers, and earn continuing education credits, all ahead of the spring season. For many attendees, it is one of the few times each year they can step away from day to day operations to compare notes on new technologies, regulations, and market conditions.

The conference is part of a growing roster of statewide meetings booked into Altoona this year, including the Iowa Tourism Conference and the Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit in March at Prairie Meadows. Those events are expected to bring additional visitors into local hotels, restaurants, and shops over the coming weeks.
