City highlights Mobile DMV visit for residents

The city is pointing residents to a newly announced Mobile DMV visit from the state’s Secretary of State’s office. The one-day stop will be part of Congresswoman Robin Kelly’s youth opportunities fair on March 14 at Hillcrest High School in Country Club Hills.

The mobile unit will handle many everyday services, including driver’s license renewals that do not require testing, standard and REAL ID state IDs, vehicle registration and license plate stickers. Appointments and proper documentation are required, so residents are being encouraged to plan ahead before spots fill up.

Community hub closes today amid bitter cold

Over on Olde Western Avenue, a neighborhood resource network serving Blue Island and Robbins posted a simple message for neighbors, saying it is closed today and urging everyone to stay warm. The group, based at 13315 Olde Western Avenue, typically connects residents with resources, events and jobs around the area.

The closure comes as dangerous wind chills linger in Cook County and local agencies remind residents to use warming centers and take extra care with space heaters and other home heating options. Anyone needing help finding a warm place to go is being urged to reach out to county information lines or trusted local partners.

Music and nightlife on Olde Western and beyond

Despite the cold, there is still live music and plenty of indoor fun on the calendar. Rock Island Public House on Olde Western is featuring a soulful Boombox set this weekend, with funk, jazz and blues on the schedule alongside its rotating craft beer lineup. The bar is also gearing up for a big game watch party on Sunday with drink specials and food from a local pizza partner.

Tonight in downtown Blue Island, the Lyric Theater is hosting a tribute show celebrating the music of Tedeschi Trucks Band, giving locals another way to spend a winter evening close to home. Regional event listings also highlight a fishing and outdoor show in nearby Alsip for those willing to bundle up and travel a few minutes up the road.
