Boston’s 2026 Eventful Year: World Cup, Tall Ships, and More
Boston is gearing up for a landmark year with major events, including the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding, seven FIFA World Cup matches, and the return of the Tall Ships to Boston Harbor.
Celebrating the 250th Anniversary
This year marks the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding. Boston will commemorate this milestone with reenactments and parades, notably celebrating Evacuation Day on March 17 in South Boston.
World Cup Matches at Gillette Stadium
For the first time, Boston will host seven FIFA World Cup matches, including a quarterfinal, at Gillette Stadium. FIFA refers to the venue as “Boston Stadium.” Fan zones are expected throughout the city, particularly at City Hall Plaza and the Boston Common, creating a global hub for soccer enthusiasts.
Return of the Tall Ships
The iconic Tall Ships will return to Boston Harbor from July 11–16 for Sail Boston 2026. This event is anticipated to draw international attention and influxes of tourists, leading to hotel rates surging by approximately 30% during the peak weeks.
Enhanced Transportation Services
In response to the influx of visitors, the state plans to enhance MBTA services and introduce fan shuttles to facilitate transportation between South Station and Gillette Stadium, ensuring smooth travel for attendees.
Upcoming Events This Week
This week’s event lineup in the Boston area includes a variety of cultural, sports, and entertainment activities. On Monday, the Beanpot Semifinals take place at TD Garden, featuring Boston’s top four college hockey teams in games at 5pm and 8pm. On Tuesday, February 3, Caitlin Vincent will speak at the Harvard Book Store about her book “The Art of the Audition,” which delves into the competitive world of classical music auditions. On Wednesday, February 4, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Eugene Robinson will appear at WBUR’s CitySpace to present and discuss his new book, “Freedom Lost, Freedom Won,” starting at 6:30pm. Wrapping up the week on Friday and Saturday (February 6–7), comedian Bert Kreischer brings his “Tops Off World Tour” to the Wang Theatre, offering energetic stand-up performances at 7pm.
Verizon Issues Refunds Amid Channel Blackout
Due to a contract dispute between Verizon Fios and Cox Media Group, thousands of Verizon customers in Boston have experienced a prolonged blackout of key TV channels, including FOX and NBC, since December 15, 2025. This outage led to viewers missing important programming, such as NFL broadcasts and the New England Patriots’ playoff run. As a goodwill gesture, Verizon is issuing a $10.99 credit to affected customers — a rare move intended to help cover the cost of alternative streaming services where the blacked-out content might be available. This decision reflects Verizon’s attempt to maintain customer loyalty while the blackout continues. No resolution appears imminent, raising concerns that fans may miss major upcoming events like the Super Bowl on February 8 unless a deal is struck. Verizon customers eligible for the credit will be contacted regarding how to redeem it.
Coastal Flood Watch in Effect
A Coastal Flood Watch is in effect for the eastern Massachusetts coast, including Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket, from Sunday morning through Monday afternoon. Minor to moderate coastal flooding is possible around high tide, with water levels potentially reaching 1 to 2 feet. Residents are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions during this period.
Upcoming Events in the Fenway Area
Several events are scheduled in the Fenway area in the coming days. On Wednesday, February 4, from 6–7:30 pm, the Guild House at 20 Charlesgate West will host a Housing Justice Dinner with state legislators to discuss housing policy needed for an affordable community. On Sunday, February 8, at 6:30 pm, the Fenway area will host a Super Bowl LX viewing event, with possible traffic interruptions near Lansdowne Street due to the Fenway All Access Block Party from 4–11:30 pm. Additionally, on Sunday, February 8, at 2 pm, the Puppy Bowl XXII will take place, featuring 150 rescue puppies from 72 shelters across the U.S., spotlighting adoptable dogs.
