Carlisle heads into Saturday with a full slate of Ice Art Fest activities, busy downtown shops, and some of the coldest air of the season settling in.

Ice Art Fest turns 10 downtown

The 10th annual Ice Art Fest continues today across downtown, with more than 100 ice sculptures scattered through the historic district from Friday through Sunday afternoon. New this year is a Snow Zone play area in the pocket park off West High Street, giving kids a spot to burn off energy while adults take photos and warm up with hot drinks from nearby businesses.

The festival officially runs through 3 p.m. Sunday, with highlights including a ribbon-cutting on the square, the towering ice throne sponsored by a local health system, live carving demonstrations on the square, and horse-drawn carriage rides looping around the central blocks. Expect heavier pedestrian traffic around the square and along High and Hanover streets, along with tight parking near the courthouse and the main festival map locations.

Downtown merchants are leaning into the festival weekend with extended hours, specials, and live entertainment. A local veterans post is hosting an afternoon chili cook-off and evening live music, while breweries and restaurants are mixing in breakfast events, outdoor bars, and special menus geared to festival foot traffic.

Several boutiques are advertising later hours, pop-up charm bars, and one-day discounts for shoppers who brave the cold. The Carlisle Theatre is anchoring the evening with a rock tribute show and family musical performances stacked around matinee and evening showtimes, giving visitors a warm indoor option between sculpture walks.

Dangerous cold and high winds today

Against the festive backdrop, public safety officials are urging caution. A cold weather advisory and extreme cold warning are in effect through Sunday morning, paired with a wind advisory for much of today. Forecasts call for wind chills dropping as low as 20 degrees below zero at times, with northwest gusts that could top 50 miles per hour across Cumberland County.

The combination of bitter wind chills and strong gusts raises the risk of frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, along with scattered tree damage and isolated power outages. Residents are encouraged to limit time outside, dress in layers, cover exposed skin, and bring pets indoors. Anyone traveling for festival events should build in extra time for icy spots and be prepared for blowing snow and reduced visibility on open stretches.
