Colorado Springs Local Headlines: February 22, 2026
Colorado Springs, CO – February 22, 2026 – Traffic shifts, fire investigations and new business events headline a busy weekend across the Pikes Peak region.
Colorado Springs, CO – Here is a quick look at some of the most important local stories affecting the city and nearby communities this weekend.
Major traffic shift coming to Powers and Airport
Drivers on the east side of town will see significant changes at Powers Boulevard and Airport Road as portions of a new diverging diamond interchange open next week. State transportation officials say both new Airport Road bridges over Powers will begin carrying through traffic, permanently rerouting vehicles onto the elevated spans while work continues on the remaining ramps and connections.
The shift is expected to wrap up by mid‑week, with some turns requiring signed detours until the full interchange is finished. Officials are urging drivers to slow down, follow construction signage closely and give themselves extra time, especially during the first few days of the new pattern.
Investigation continues after Durango Drive building fire
Fire investigators are working to determine what sparked a dramatic blaze that led to a roof collapse at a commercial building in the 2600 block of Durango Drive on Friday. Colorado Springs Fire Department crews were initially dispatched on reports of an explosion and arrived to find heavy flames and smoke pouring from the structure.
Firefighters reported no injuries and said early information suggested no one was inside at the time, though they still needed to fully search the debris. Neighbors and nearby workers described seeing a small puff of smoke quickly grow into a fire that engulfed the building and caused walls to fail. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Business and networking events start this week
Local entrepreneurs and professionals will have several chances to learn and connect as a new slate of business events begins February 22. A series of webinars will cover topics like using artificial intelligence to grow a business, basic accounting and financial principles, and strategies for managing money in partnerships.
In-person networking is also on the calendar, with a speed networking event hosted by a regional women’s chamber of commerce at an office on Kelly Johnson Boulevard. Looking ahead, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sessions will continue through early April at High Prairie Library in Falcon, offering free tax help to qualifying residents who earned under a set income threshold in 2025.
On the lighter side: Record-setting magic show
Fans of live entertainment are looking forward to the return of a world-record-holding magician to Cosmo’s Magic Theater. The performer recently set his third Guinness World Record in card throwing and is back in Colorado Springs for a run of shows. Theater operators say the act combines technical skill with plenty of humor and audience interaction, giving residents another option for a night out close to home.
