Local headlines to start your Friday
Bond program: Denver sells first $410M tranche
Denver has completed the sale of the first $410 million slice of the voter-approved $950 million Vibrant Denver bond program. City officials say locking in a roughly 4.28% average interest rate helps keep borrowing costs below the maximum rates authorized, while letting planning, design and early construction start across dozens of projects this year.
The first round of funding targets transportation and mobility work, parks improvements, city facilities upgrades, plus set-asides tied to housing/sheltering and health and human services. The city also says a public dashboard is expected soon so residents can track schedules and costs project by project.
Housing: 135 income-restricted homes planned on Federal Blvd
The Denver Housing Authority has selected the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless to develop up to 135 income-restricted apartments at 4745 Federal Blvd., a former motel site near the Berkeley and Sunnyside neighborhoods. All units are planned for households earning up to 60% of area median income, with at least 40% reserved for families at 30% AMI.
The developer plans to apply in August for 4% tax credits; if financing comes together, construction could start in late 2027.
Schools: Proposed immigration ‘safe zone’ policy draws divided testimony
Denver Public Schools is weighing a board-level policy that would label school buildings, grounds, buses and bus stops as ‘safe zones’ and limit staff cooperation with federal immigration agents unless required legal conditions are met. Supporters told the board the policy would add clarity and reassurance for families; opponents said the district already has procedures and worried a new policy could be misread as promising more protection than schools can guarantee.
Weather and travel: Snowy reset after a warm stretch
A quick-hitting storm is bringing snow to the metro area Friday, with around 1 to 3 inches possible in Denver and heavier totals in the foothills and mountains. State transportation officials urged drivers to plan for slick roads and changing conditions, especially along mountain corridors and passes through Saturday morning.
