El Paso Daily Brief: Flock Cameras, Loop 375 Closures, and Fire-Weather Heat
El Paso, TX – March 2, 2026 – City Council tees up debate on Flock cameras, Loop 375 closures affect drivers, and heat boosts fire risk; EPFD spotlights women.
Here is what El Paso is talking about as the week gets going, from City Hall policy questions to road work and a stretch of unusually warm, dry weather.
1) License-plate camera program heads for a public debate
Two City Council members have put the city’s network of automated license plate reader cameras on the agenda for discussion at the Tuesday, March 3 meeting. The push centers on privacy and oversight, with particular sensitivity about how location data might be used or shared in a border community.
The program involves roughly 150 cameras around El Paso. As described publicly, the system retains plate data for a limited period and is searchable by law enforcement, which supporters say can help with investigations while critics argue stronger guardrails are needed before renewing contracts.
2) Loop 375 closure impacts drivers through early Monday
If your commute runs through Northeast El Paso, a major weekend closure on the Purple Heart Highway has been the big headache. Northbound Loop 375 lanes between Montana Avenue and Spur 601 were scheduled to be shut down starting early Saturday, Feb. 28, with reopening planned for about 5 a.m. Monday, March 2 as crews install culverts tied to a widening project.
Detours and extra travel time have been the theme, especially for early shifts and airport or Fort Bliss traffic.
3) Record warmth lingers and fire danger climbs
Forecasters say temperatures are running well above normal into Tuesday, and the dry pattern is expected to continue. As winds pick up during the week, conditions could approach near-critical fire weather at times, especially in the afternoon.
- Skip outdoor burning and be cautious with anything that can spark.
- Secure trailer chains and avoid dragging metal on roadways.
- Hydrate early and plan shade breaks if you will be outside.
4) Firefighters mark Women’s Month with an all-women shift
To open International Women’s Month, an all-women crew at the El Paso Fire Department worked a full shift together, highlighting the growing presence of women in a traditionally male-dominated field. Department leaders said they hope the visibility helps recruit more women into the job; the department has reported 19 women among roughly 900 firefighters.
