Public safety
Investigators say the crash happened late Monday on All American Freeway between Cliffdale Road and Morganton Road. Police reported that a Mercedes-Benz was traveling the wrong way, with headlights off at times, before colliding head-on with a Volvo SUV. A 31-year-old passenger in the Mercedes-Benz died at the scene. The driver of the Mercedes-Benz remained in critical condition, and two people in the Volvo were hospitalized with serious injuries.
PFAS lawsuit heads closer to trial
Cumberland County’s bid to recover costs tied to PFAS contamination took a major step this week after the N.C. Court of Appeals denied an appeal by the companies involved. The case centers on alleged emissions linked to the Fayetteville Works plant near the Bladen-Cumberland county line and their impacts on wells and public facilities in the Gray’s Creek area. With the appeal denied, the legal fight now moves toward a jury deciding damages and what remedies are required.
Shelter reopening, with limits
Cumberland County Animal Services says it is open again after closing to contain a respiratory illness among shelter animals. For now, adoptions require booking an appointment online, and walk-through browsing is still paused. The shelter says it is resuming stray intake while continuing enhanced cleaning and monitoring.
Fort Bragg & jobs
Veterans, military spouses, and service members can plan for a no-fee job fair Thursday, Feb. 26, at Fort Bragg’s Iron Mike Conference & Catering Center. Organizers say more than 49 employers are expected, along with resume help and other support services.
