Fayetteville Local Headlines: Safety, Services, and Sports on February 21, 2026
Fayetteville, NC – February 21, 2026 – Police seek tips in a School Street shooting, new DMV kiosks launch, and Fayetteville State hoops power through February.
Fayetteville, NC starts the weekend with a mix of public safety updates, new state services, and strong showings from local college basketball teams.
Police seek tips after School Street shooting
Fayetteville police are asking for the public’s help after a man was seriously injured in a shooting along School Street on Thursday afternoon. Officers responded just after 4 p.m. and found a man with a gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover, but detectives are still working to identify whoever pulled the trigger.
Investigators with the department’s Crimes Against Persons unit are leading the case and are urging anyone who was in the area or has home or doorbell camera footage to come forward. Anonymous tips can be shared through local Crime Stoppers, which often plays a key role in resolving shooting investigations in the city.
DMV expands self-service kiosks in Fayetteville
Drivers in Fayetteville now have a few more ways to skip the line at the DMV. State transportation officials recently added new NCDMV Express self-service kiosks at grocery stores in the Fayetteville and Fort Liberty area. The machines allow residents to renew driver licenses and ID cards, update addresses, renew vehicle registrations, print updated stickers, and even register to vote.
The kiosks are part of a statewide effort to cut long wait times at DMV offices by shifting routine transactions to either online platforms or neighborhood locations. The latest expansion brings multiple kiosks to high-traffic stores in Cumberland County, giving residents more flexibility to handle paperwork on their own schedule, including evenings and weekends.
Fayetteville State hoops riding late-season momentum
On the sports side, Fayetteville State University’s women’s basketball team continued a strong February run with a decisive road win over Shaw. Led by a double-double performance from forward Nyah Wilkins, the Broncos pulled away early and never looked back, strengthening their position near the top of the CIAA standings.
The victory caps an important stretch for the program as conference play tightens and postseason seeding comes into focus. With both the women’s and men’s teams facing key matchups against Shaw this weekend, Fayetteville fans have plenty to watch as the Broncos push toward tournament time.
Looking ahead
Between the new DMV kiosks, ongoing public safety work, and a busy college basketball schedule, Fayetteville residents have a full slate of local developments to track as February winds down.
