Transformer Malfunction Leads to Evacuation in Fort Myers

A transformer malfunction led to the evacuation of over 100 people from a five-story office building on Cleveland Avenue. Firefighters responded to reports of thick smoke filling the building around 2:24 p.m. on January 27. The smoke, originating from a faulty step-down transformer connected to the building’s HVAC system, spread from the second to the fifth floor. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The building remained closed for the rest of the business day while electricians worked to repair the transformer. The property management will decide whether it can reopen on Wednesday.
