Overnight house fire in northwest Fort Wayne leaves one dead
Firefighters were called to a home in the 2700 block of Sterling Street, near Goshen Road and I-69, late Thursday night. Officials said one person was found dead inside after crews searched the house. Three other people and a dog were able to get out, and another occupant was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Plea deal reached in 2025 Valentine’s Day shooting case
Court records show 27-year-old Austin Freed has agreed to plead guilty to aggravated battery in a case tied to a February 2025 shooting in Fort Wayne. Under the agreement, other charges are to be dismissed, and the deal calls for a 16-year prison sentence. Investigators said the victim drove to a hospital with a gunshot wound to the neck and was stabilized. Freed is scheduled to be sentenced March 18, 2026.
$10,000 grant to improve Colonial Heritage Wetlands amenities
A $10,000 grant will fund upgrades at the Colonial Heritage Wetlands, including additional lighting and seating. City officials said the improvements are aimed at better safety, accessibility, and year-round use for nearby residents. The wetlands were completed in 2023 as part of the Hessen-Cassel Road stormwater project designed to reduce flooding and filter runoff.
City seeks $16.2M federal BUILD grant for Ewing Street Bridge project
The city says it has submitted a federal BUILD grant application for $16.2 million to improve the Ewing Street Bridge over the St. Marys River and nearby roadway connections downtown. The project description says the bridge carries about 14,300 vehicles a day and, without improvements, could face load limits or closure within roughly a decade. Plans also include technology upgrades such as in-pavement sensors on the bridge and smart video detection at nearby intersections.

A colder, windier pattern is expected to settle in. Forecasts call for gusts up to around 25 to 30 mph, Saturday highs in the 40s, and mostly dry daytime conditions. Some light snow is possible north of Fort Wayne late in the weekend, with any accumulation expected to be minor. Early next week trends warmer, with multiple chances for rain Tuesday through Friday.
