Fort Wayne tracks housing input, data center outreach, and Sweetwater growth
Fort Wayne, IN – April 4, 2026 – Housing surveys stay open, the city keeps answering data center questions, and Sweetwater touts a major retail draw.
Fort Wayne heads into the weekend with a few practical items worth tracking: housing input, ongoing data center outreach, and another sign of business activity on the west side.
Housing plan stays open for comment
The city is still collecting feedback for its 2026-2030 Consolidated Plan, the five-year roadmap that guides how federal housing and community development dollars are spent locally. The current process centers on affordable housing, support for families, and neighborhood improvements.
Residents can still complete surveys, and the formal comment period runs through May 1. Public hearings are scheduled for April 29 at the Allen County Public Library, giving renters, homeowners, service providers, and neighborhood groups another chance to weigh in before the plan goes to HUD in mid-May.
Data center questions move into a more public phase
The city’s public data center page now acts as a running FAQ on jobs, utilities, water use, and environmental concerns tied to the Google project in southeast Fort Wayne. According to the city, the first phase is already operating and construction is continuing.
The FAQ also lays out the city’s current position that utility rates are not expected to rise because of the project alone, and that Fort Wayne’s water system has available capacity. For residents, the bigger takeaway is that a project once discussed mostly in broad economic terms is now being framed through day-to-day issues like bills, infrastructure, and neighborhood impact.
Sweetwater signals more regional pull
On the business side, Sweetwater is promoting a May 16 National Band Expo at its Fort Wayne campus and says it expects to draw customers from around the Midwest. That matters locally not just as a retail event, but as another example of Fort Wayne businesses using destination-style programming to bring outside spending into the city.
In a separate company update, Sweetwater said it served 1.7 million customers in 2025 and reported $1.86 billion in revenue, underscoring the company’s continuing weight in the local economy.
