City sets hearing on new restaurant liquor license

The city has scheduled a public hearing for a new Restaurant A beer-and-wine liquor license for 305 Fire, a business at 305 South Second Street downtown. The hearing will take place at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10, in the council chambers at City Hall on West Aztec Avenue.

Residents who live, work, or own property nearby can use the hearing to share support or concerns about the license before city leaders send their recommendation to state regulators. Notice of the meeting was posted Friday, giving neighbors time to review the proposal in advance.

Busy Saturday of markets, crafts and family activities

Gallup’s weekend calendar is full, with today’s 9th Street Flea Market running at 340 North 9th Street and offering food vendors, handmade jewelry, Navajo rugs, and other local goods. The market typically operates from mid-morning into the late afternoon, drawing both residents and visitors.

On the city’s north side, organizers are hosting the 7th Annual Valentine’s Craft Fair at 1300 West Maloney Avenue, giving local makers space to sell seasonal gifts ahead of the holiday. Downtown, the historic El Morro Theatre is advertising a run of the production ‘Solo Mio,’ adding an arts option to the day’s lineup.

The Octavia Fellin public library system is also leaning into family programming, with children’s events and maker activities at the Children and Youth Library on West Aztec Avenue. Families looking for indoor options can pair a library visit with a stop at nearby businesses along Route 66.

Gallup lawmaker pushes universal child care bill

At the state capitol, a lawmaker from Gallup helped advance a proposal that could eventually affect many local families. The Senate Education Committee on Friday moved forward a universal child care bill that would limit when higher earning families pay co-pays while keeping care free for most households.

Sen. George Muñoz, who represents Gallup and parts of McKinley County, is a co-sponsor of the measure. Supporters argue that locking in long term funding and clear co-pay rules will make it easier for rural communities like Gallup to attract and keep child care providers.

The bill still faces additional committee stops and floor votes in both chambers before it can reach the governor. For now, the action in Santa Fe is an early signal that lawmakers are focused on affordability for working parents across western New Mexico.
