Garland Daily Briefing: Development, Schools, and Community Events
Garland, TX – February 18, 2026 – Garland schools plan campus upgrades, the city amps up live music and reading, and residents get fresh job and bid news.
Garland schools move ahead with major campus renovations
Garland Independent School District is moving forward with a construction manager-at-risk project to renovate North Garland and South Garland high schools. The district and its contractor are inviting subcontractors and suppliers to bid on the work, with campus walkthroughs scheduled for today, Feb. 18, and final bids due in early March.
The project signals continued investment in aging campuses on both sides of town. District leaders have said recent bond and budget decisions are aimed at updating classrooms, athletic spaces, and core infrastructure while keeping schools competitive with newer facilities in neighboring communities.
Contractors are being encouraged to attend a virtual pre-proposal meeting and review detailed bid packages before submitting proposals. Work is expected to roll out later this year once bids are evaluated and contracts are awarded.
City spotlights local sounds with ‘Music Made Here’
Garland is leaning into its downtown arts scene with the upcoming ‘Music Made Here’ concert featuring Chayce Beckham with Sterling Elza. The free show is set for early March at 520 W. State Street, in the heart of the city’s growing entertainment district.
The performance is part of a broader effort to use live music to draw residents and visitors into downtown, support small businesses, and give local audiences more reasons to stay in Garland for a night out. The series also helps showcase the city’s investment in public event spaces around the Square.
Organizers expect strong turnout and are encouraging guests to arrive early, enjoy nearby restaurants, and treat the concert as a kickoff to spring event season.
Garland Reading Challenge keeps adults turning pages
The Garland Public Library is inviting adults to join the 2026 Garland Reading Challenge, a year-long program that runs through Dec. 31. Participants are encouraged to read or listen to 12 books across themed categories, from debut authors and new releases to small-town stories and titles selected by local book clubs.
No formal registration is required. Residents can download a reading log from the library’s website or pick one up in person, then track their progress at home. The challenge is designed to nudge readers out of their comfort zones while keeping local libraries at the center of community life.
Job fair aims to recruit new educators and staff
Garland ISD is also preparing for a districtwide job fair on Saturday, Feb. 28, at Sachse High School. The event will run in the morning hours and will include opportunities for on-site contracts for qualified candidates.
The fair is open to prospective teachers, support staff, and others interested in school-based roles across Garland, Rowlett, and Sachse. District officials are promoting the event as a one-stop way to learn about benefits, career pathways, and immediate openings ahead of the 2026–27 school year.
Ongoing city initiatives support tourism and culture
These school and community efforts build on recent recognition of Garland as a Tourism Friendly Texas Certified Community. City leaders have highlighted tourism, cultural events, and downtown revitalization as key tools for boosting local jobs and diversifying the tax base.
Together, capital projects in neighborhood schools, free downtown concerts, and year-long library programs reflect a city trying to balance growth, education, and quality of life for longtime residents and newcomers alike.
