Glendale residents can weigh in today on South Verdugo sewer and street overhaul

Glendale residents can review and comment today, Wednesday, August 5, on a planned South Verdugo-area infrastructure project that could bring street, sidewalk, accessibility and sewer improvements before tentative construction in fall 2026.

The City of Glendale will hold a community meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Glendale City Hall Council Chambers. The meeting will also be broadcast virtually, giving residents another way to review the design-phase proposal and provide input.

Project area includes South Verdugo streets

The South Verdugo Road adjacent streets sewer and street improvements project covers various streets in an area bounded by Colorado Street to the north, Plumas Street to the south, South Verdugo Road to the west and Glendale’s eastern city limits.

The city says the project remains in the design phase. The stated boundaries describe the planning area, but the work would not necessarily be identical on every street or property within it.

Planned street and accessibility work

Proposed improvements include selective removal and reconstruction of deteriorated pavement, asphalt-concrete pavement work and street resurfacing. The plan also includes selective repairs or reconstruction involving damaged curbs, gutters, sidewalks, driveways, cross gutters, alley aprons and local depressions.

The plan calls for constructing or modifying curb ramps to meet ADA guidelines, along with adjustments to existing manholes, utility valves and water meters to finished grade. Those elements could affect pedestrians, people using mobility devices, property owners and drivers if the work advances.

Additional proposed features include new street trees and the removal and replacement of existing traffic striping and pavement markings. Rock Glen Avenue is also identified for a new Class III bike boulevard. The city describes that element as part of the project proposal; it should not be read as final construction approval.

Sewer mains would be upsized and repaired

The sewer portion of the project would include upsizing the sanitary sewer main line, sanitary sewer repairs and lining. The broader design also includes adjustments to utility infrastructure.

For residents and businesses in the area, potential effects could involve pavement, sidewalks, driveways, curbs, sewer service, street trees, bicycle markings and accessibility features. The city’s current materials do not establish a final project cost, construction duration, traffic-control plan or property-specific impact.

Construction timing is tentative

Glendale says construction is tentatively scheduled to start in fall 2026, barring unforeseen circumstances. The project is funded through State Gas Tax and Sewer Funds, but the current project information does not establish a final project cost.

Today’s meeting is an opportunity to review the proposal while design work is still underway. Residents, pedestrians, cyclists, property owners and commuters should watch for later city notices if the project moves toward construction, including future updates on traffic impacts.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Glendale City Hall’s Council Chambers and is available through a virtual broadcast. Further project decisions and the construction schedule remain subject to continued design development and later city action.
