Hail Reports, Shocker Wins and Thunder Road Trip Lead Wichita Headlines
Wichita, KS – March 11, 2026 – Storms bring hail reports, Wichita State rolls into conference play, and Thunder wrap road swing.
It has been a busy few days across Wichita, with severe weather, college sports momentum and pro hockey headlines all making news.
Storms Bring Hail, Wind Across Wichita
Strong storms moved through the Wichita area late March 9 into March 10, producing hail and damaging winds in parts of the city. Weather tracking maps show reports of dime-sized hail along with gusty winds Monday night.
The system was part of a broader round of severe weather impacting multiple states. While no widespread damage has been confirmed locally, residents are encouraged to check roofs, vehicles and outdoor property for minor storm damage.
Wichita State Secures Top Seed Advantage
Wichita State basketball wrapped up regular season conference play in strong position this week, earning a No. 2 seed in the American Conference Championship. The Shockers finished tied in league play but secured the higher seed through a tiebreaker.
The favorable placement gives Wichita State a triple bye into the semifinals, scheduled for Saturday, March 14. The team will face the winner of earlier tournament matchups as they look to advance to the championship game.
Meanwhile, Wichita State men’s tennis also made headlines after upsetting a nationally ranked Oklahoma State squad on March 8, marking one of the program’s biggest wins in recent years.
Thunder Near End of Historic Road Trip
The Wichita Thunder continue their extended road stretch, wrapping up the final leg of what has been the longest road trip in franchise history. In games played March 4 through March 8, the team went 1-1-1 in a demanding stretch of four games in five days.
The Thunder now sit in the middle of the Mountain Division standings as they prepare for a series in Rapid City later this week. Special teams play has been a bright spot, with the club successfully killing off 19 straight opposing power plays.
From shifting weather to postseason hopes and playoff pushes, Wichita heads into midweek with plenty to watch.
