Extreme cold grips Hawthorne

Hawthorne wakes up today to dangerous cold and strong northwest winds after a frigid Saturday, as regional forecasters keep wind and extreme cold alerts in place.

Temperatures are expected to hover in the teens with wind chills well below zero, and gusts could bring down small branches or unsecured items. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, bundle up in layers, and check on older neighbors, anyone without adequate heat, and outdoor pets.

Road crews and snow operations

Passaic County crews have been working through the weekend on snow and ice removal along major routes, following a countywide operations notice for Saturday morning. Drivers in and around Hawthorne may still encounter slick spots, especially on bridges, side streets, and shaded areas.

Local officials continue to emphasize slow speeds, extra braking distance, and giving plows and salt trucks plenty of room to work. Any downed wires or trees should be reported immediately, and residents are reminded not to attempt to move live wires on their own.

Looking ahead, the borough calendar shows municipal court scheduled again later this week, along with a bulk C & D Dumpster collection day on Saturday, February 14. Borough offices will close for Presidents’ Day on February 16.

On the community side, the town is promoting an upcoming fish and chips dinner in support of the Hawthorne High School Marching Band, as well as ongoing winter programs through local schools, churches, and civic groups.
