Senior property-tax relief moves ahead

City leaders announced a senior-focused property-tax relief plan after the City Council voted to advance the measure. The program is designed as a one-time payment in fiscal year 2026, aimed at helping older homeowners stay put as property values and tax bills keep climbing.

As outlined in city materials and reporting, eligibility is tied to being 65 or older, living in a homesteaded home in Hialeah, and meeting a household-income cap of $37,694. The plan also relies on the Florida low-income senior homestead exemption being on file as of Jan. 1, 2025, which is meant to keep the pool tightly defined.

City estimates put the one-year program at about $1.2 million, reaching thousands of households. The proposal discusses guardrails such as an assessed-value cap (noted at $200,000) and frames the relief as temporary unless the council renews it.

Public safety: machete break-in case

In a separate case, deputies arrested a 39-year-old man from Hialeah after investigators said he tried to force entry into two Miami Lakes townhomes. Authorities say the attempts were captured on home security cameras, and the suspect was later found nearby holding a machete.

Investigators said one attempted entry involved a hammer and damage to a sliding glass door frame; in the second incident, authorities said a machete was used while trying to pry open a door and while striking a window. The suspect faces burglary and criminal mischief charges and was reported held without bond.

On the calendar (Feb. 26)

The city is hosting a property appraiser outreach event Thursday, Feb. 26, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Milander Center, offering one-on-one help for residents with questions about property taxes and exemptions.

Also Thursday morning, the city has scheduled a dog park grand opening and ribbon cutting, including an official name reveal for the large and small dog areas.
