Girls hoops power Highland’s winter weekend

Highland fans have plenty to cheer about after the girls basketball team rolled to a 66–21 playoff win over Calumet New Tech earlier this week. Senior guard Jordan Steele led the way with 22 points and nine steals, continuing a hot streak of five straight games with 21 or more points. Teammate Savannah Ballard added 15 points and four steals as the Trojans pushed their record to 16–6 and extended a run of seven wins in their last eight games.

The victory keeps Highland moving through the postseason, with the next matchup set against East Chicago Central on Friday night. For families, it’s a good chance to pack the gym, back the Trojans, and ride the momentum into the rest of February.

Babysitter training and park programs today

Closer to home, Highland Parks and Recreation is turning Lincoln Center into a winter learning hub. A Babysitter Certification Class is scheduled there today, giving teens a chance to build safety skills, gain confidence, and earn a useful credential before spring and summer jobs arrive.

The parks department is also promoting a full slate of indoor options for the season, from fitness classes and pickleball lessons to room rentals for birthday parties and family gatherings. With extended hours at the Fieldhouse and Fitness Center, residents have plenty of ways to stay active even while temperatures swing outside.

‘Cuteness Convention’ and more weekend fun

For something lighter, America’s Antique Mall on Indianapolis Boulevard is leaning into Valentine’s season with a “Cuteness Convention” event today. The vendor mall already draws shoppers with thousands of square feet of antiques, collectibles, and handmade pieces, and the themed gathering is designed to highlight especially whimsical and photo-friendly finds.

Around town, community calendars also feature smaller meetups focused on writing, meditation, and socializing, many of them a short drive from Highland. Put together, it makes for a weekend that mixes competitive sports, practical training, and low-key fun — a good snapshot of winter life in northwest Indiana.
