1) Hazmat investigation continues at gated Irvine home

Federal and local crews spent much of the week at a home in the Altair community near Cartwheel and Iluna after a landlord reported suspicious circumstances on Monday. Authorities say a juvenile at the residence mixed unknown chemicals, prompting a cautious, multi-day response that has included specialized evidence and hazardous-material teams.

Officials have emphasized there is no known threat to the public and no evacuations were ordered as experts methodically evaluate what was found inside the home.

2) Commuter heads-up: signal work and overnight closures

The City posted a new round of roadway advisories covering February 25 through March 4, including daytime traffic-signal work and overnight closures tied to the Jeffrey Open Space Trail bicycle and pedestrian bridge project. Expect delays around major arterials and freeway access points, especially during late-night work windows.

• Signal work: Alton Parkway and West Yale Loop was scheduled for daytime flashing/red mode on Thursday.
• Overnight closure: Walnut Avenue south of Jeffrey Road during late-night hours, affecting access to the southbound I-5 ramps and nearby park-and-ride lots.

Separately, state road updates also flagged overnight construction-related connector closures affecting the SR-133 to southbound I-405 connection in Irvine through early Friday.

3) UC Irvine sports gets a national spotlight

On the lighter side, UC Irvine announced its regular-season finale against UC Davis on March 7 will be carried as an ESPNU wildcard broadcast, with an updated start time. The schedule tweak adds another nationally televised moment for the Bren Events Center as the team heads toward the Big West tournament stretch.

And on Friday night, a top-ranked men’s volleyball matchup was set to be played in Irvine, bringing a big-crowd, big-energy evening to campus.
