Jonathan Daniels Takes Over as PortMiami Director and CEO
Jonathan Daniels began leading PortMiami on Aug. 10 as the facility’s director and chief executive officer, ending a short interim period at one of South Florida’s most consequential transportation assets.
Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced Daniels’ appointment on June 23. Roy Coley had served as interim port director beginning July 1, and remained in that role until Daniels assumed the permanent position.
The transition puts Daniels in charge of a Miami institution tied to cruise travel, cargo movement, logistics and related employment. Miami-Dade County says PortMiami supports about 340,000 jobs and generates $61.4 billion in economic impact across Florida.
What changes with the appointment
Daniels’ arrival gives PortMiami permanent leadership after the interim period. The port’s director and CEO is responsible for leading an institution whose operations connect the waterfront with cruise companies, cargo carriers, logistics businesses and workers throughout the broader economy.
For Miami, the change matters because PortMiami is not only a passenger and freight facility. Its activity supports businesses and jobs connected to transportation, tourism, shipping and related services. The county’s figures describe the scale it attributes to the port: about 340,000 jobs supported and $61.4 billion in statewide economic impact.
Those economic-impact figures come from Miami-Dade County’s announcement and describe the port’s reported reach; they are not a new calculation tied to Daniels’ first day. The appointment itself does not announce a change to PortMiami’s policy, operations, staffing or capital plans.
Daniels’ port experience
Daniels previously served as executive director of the Maryland Port Administration and held an executive position with the Port of Baltimore. Both roles gave him experience in public port administration before his move to Miami.
Miami-Dade County also said Daniels had earlier public-sector experience connected to PortMiami and the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department. That background includes work connected to both the local port and another major county department.
The combination of Maryland, Baltimore and Miami-Dade experience places Daniels in a leadership role at a port with both local and statewide economic importance. PortMiami’s work spans cruise and cargo activity, while its related network includes logistics operations and other businesses that depend on access to the facility.
Timeline for the leadership change
The county announced Daniels on June 23, 2026. Coley began serving as interim director on July 1, 2026, during the transition. Daniels then took over on Aug. 10, 2026.
That sequence marks the shift from interim to permanent leadership. Miami-Dade’s announcement did not identify separate initial operating priorities for Daniels or announce immediate personnel, policy or capital changes connected to his appointment.
Daniels now leads PortMiami as it continues serving the cruise, cargo and logistics sectors. Any future decisions involving operations, staffing, policy or construction would be subsequent actions rather than part of the appointment itself.
