Roaring ’20s symphony tonight in La Porte
The La Porte County Symphony Orchestra brings some Jazz Age warmth to town tonight with its second subscription concert of the season, “The Roaring 20s: A Celebration of America’s Jazz Age.” The program mixes classics by Irving Berlin, George Gershwin and Cole Porter with lighter pieces, and organizers are encouraging 1920s-inspired outfits, lobby jazz and photo ops to make the evening feel like a community party as much as a concert. The show is scheduled for 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m.
PTO treasurer charged after Kingsbury fund review
County investigators say a Kingsbury Parent Teacher Organization treasurer from La Porte has been charged with theft after questions were raised about irregular transactions in the group’s bank account. According to the sheriff’s office, a La Porte Community School Corporation administrator first flagged the concerns, leading to a review that identified 46-year-old Kerry Surowiec as a suspect. A judge later found probable cause, a warrant was issued, and Surowiec turned herself in at the La Porte County Jail before being released on a cash bond while the case moves toward court.
Slicers on the road as season tightens
La Porte’s boys basketball team was scheduled to visit Penn on Friday night in a key late-season matchup listed on regional prep schedules. With the regular season winding down and sectional play on the horizon, the Slicers’ ability to handle tough road environments will help set expectations for the weeks ahead.
Cold, gray weekend across the Maple City
La Porte started Saturday in the mid-teens with overcast skies and feels-like readings even lower, and forecasts keep daytime highs in the low 20s with chances for light snow at times. Slick patches are possible on untreated streets and sidewalks, especially after dark, and overnight lows dipping back toward the single digits will make bundling up essential for anyone heading out to evening events.
