Laredo Daily Brief: Border Seizures, Voting Deadlines, and Police Updates
Laredo, TX – February 27, 2026 – Border agents reported major drug and weapon seizures as local Laredo schools and city hiring set new deadlines.
1) Border security: guns and drugs intercepted
Federal officers reported two major seizures tied to Laredo’s ports of entry this week. In one outbound inspection at the Juarez-Lincoln Bridge, officers said they found dozens of handguns and magazines hidden inside a passenger vehicle headed to Mexico. The driver was arrested and investigators opened a criminal case.
In a separate enforcement action, officers said they stopped a commercial shipment and discovered more than 650 pounds of methamphetamine, packaged in 30 bundles, with an estimated value near $6 million. The case is part of a broader push to use screening technology and canine teams to flag high-risk loads.
2) Elections: last day of early voting, March 3 is Election Day
Friday, February 27 is the final day to vote early in Webb County ahead of the March 3 election. The county elections office is expecting heavier lines late in the day, especially with propositions on the ballot that can slow the process.
On Election Day, 40 polling sites are expected to be open countywide from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and voters can cast a ballot at any location (not precinct-based). Curbside voting is available for voters who cannot enter a polling place.
3) Public safety staffing: police recruiting deadline Sunday
The city is accepting applications for police officer positions through 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, March 1. Recruit pay is listed just under $57,000 a year, with benefits and paid academy training. The written exam is scheduled for March 25 at Sames Auto Arena, with additional screening steps after that.
4) Police investigating early-morning stabbing at park
Police are asking for tips after a homeless woman was reportedly stabbed early Friday at a park on East Calton Road. Investigators said the victim reported the attack began after she rejected a man’s sexual advances. An aggravated assault report was filed, and Crime Stoppers is encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
