Buena Vista Sports Complex officially opens

The City of Laredo has officially opened the long-awaited Buena Vista Sports Complex in south Laredo, marking a major investment in youth sports and local tourism. The $45 million project includes multiple all-turf baseball and softball fields, multipurpose fields, concessions and extensive parking, all designed to host local leagues as well as regional tournaments.

City leaders describe the complex as a turning point for South Laredo, expected to draw visiting teams, support local businesses and provide new recreation options for families. Phase I is now in use, with additional phases planned to further expand fields and amenities in the coming years.

WBCA season continues with downtown parade, carnival

Laredo’s Washington’s Birthday Celebration is in full swing, and events will continue to bring crowds downtown through late February. On Thursday, the IBC Youth Parade Under the Stars is set to light up the streets, prompting early closures of several downtown city offices in the afternoon so crews can prepare the route.

Meanwhile, the WBCA Carnival at the Sames Auto Arena parking lot is running through February 23, offering rides, midway games and daily specials. Residents should expect heavier traffic around the arena and in the downtown core during evening parade hours.

Police investigate serious hit-and-run on Garfield Street

Authorities are investigating a hit-and-run crash that left a 71-year-old pedestrian injured in the 2800 block of Garfield Street on Monday night. Police say the driver initially fled the scene but later surrendered and was arrested on a failure to stop and render aid charge.

The victim was hospitalized with a reported head injury. Police have not released additional details, but the case adds to ongoing concerns about pedestrian safety on busy neighborhood corridors after dark.

Paranormal Cirque plans fire-themed return to Laredo

Looking ahead, an adults-only touring show is on the calendar as Paranormal Cirque: Inferno prepares a fire-themed run in Laredo from February 27 through March 2 at The Outlet Shoppes at Laredo. The horror-influenced production blends acrobatics, cabaret and pyrotechnics, and is restricted to guests 13 and older, with minors needing an accompanying adult.

Organizers say the show is intended as a late-winter entertainment boost for locals and visitors once WBCA festivities wind down.

Campus event highlights Lunar New Year and study abroad

Laredo College is also using the week to spotlight global learning. The campus is hosting a ‘New Year, New Destinations’ Lunar New Year event that combines cultural activities with information on international study opportunities for students.
