Las Vegas Daily Brief: Homicide probe, crash injuries, US 95 work zones

Monday brought a mix of developing public-safety cases and fresh updates that could affect commutes and neighborhoods across the valley.

Public safety

West-side homicide investigation: Police were called to the 1100 block of South Fort Apache Road near Charleston Boulevard Sunday night, and homicide detectives were sent to the scene. Investigators have not released victim or suspect information as the case develops.

Serious crash near Nellis and Carey: A two-vehicle collision triggered a major response Saturday afternoon, sending six people to local hospitals. Police said four of the injured were juveniles, and one juvenile remained in critical condition as of the latest update.

Crime down, traffic deaths still a worry: In a recent State of the Department address, the sheriff said violent crime and property crime fell in 2025, and homicides dropped below 100 for the first time in decades. At the same time, traffic fatalities ticked up slightly, with police urging residents to treat roadway safety as the biggest day-to-day risk.

Roads and work zones

US 95 pavement project begins: State transportation crews started a $41 million preservation project on a 17-mile stretch of US 95 in Clark County near Boulder City. Drivers should expect extended lane and shoulder restrictions starting Sunday night, reduced speeds through work zones, and construction that could run into winter 2026.

Neighborhood and business

Spring Mountain Corridor grant expands: A business-improvement grant tied to the Spring Mountain Corridor (often called Chinatown) has doubled to $1.5 million, with eligible businesses able to apply for funds to support facade, lighting, safety, and placemaking upgrades.

A longtime karaoke bar closes: Champagne’s on Maryland Parkway, a decades-old cocktail and karaoke spot that opened in the 1960s, has shut down after a final weekend run. For many regulars, it marks the end of a distinctly local slice of late-night Las Vegas.
