Here is what Lexington readers are waking up to on Wednesday, with a mix of pocketbook relief, downtown tourism planning, and a big sports weekend coming to the Horse Park.
Medical debt relief expands again
City officials say a second round of medical debt relief will wipe out more than $5.6 million in balances for nearly 3,200 Lexington residents. Letters are expected to begin arriving by mail this week. The program works by partnering with Undue Medical Debt, a nonprofit that buys qualifying debt and then forgives it, targeting households up to 400% of federal poverty guidelines or cases where medical debt is at least 5% of annual income. The city says the effort has now cleared more than $18 million in medical debt so far.
Hotels weigh a new 2% tourism assessment
A proposal discussed at a council committee meeting could allow a small group of large, full-service hotels to add a 2% surcharge to guest room bills within a defined district near the city center. Supporters say the assessment would create a dedicated pool of roughly $2 million a year for convention marketing, sales incentives, and destination development at a time when some temporary funding sources are set to expire later this year. Next steps would require a formal petition among hotel owners before anything returns to council for an ordinance vote.
State wrestling championships return to the Kentucky Horse Park
The statewide tournament is scheduled for three days at Alltech Arena, running Thursday through Saturday. Organizers say the boys’ event begins Thursday morning, continues Friday, and the girls’ championships open Saturday at 10 a.m. If you’re headed out, expect a busy stretch around the Horse Park as teams and families arrive from across Kentucky.
Looking ahead: Keeneland’s Spring Meet takes shape
Keeneland released early nomination lists for opening-weekend stakes races as the Spring Meet approaches. The Spring Meet is scheduled for April 3–24, and early nomination totals point to deep fields for signature races that help define Lexington’s spring tourism season.
