1) Police investigate fatal Eastmark-area shooting

Mesa police say officers went to a home near E. Kinetic Dr. and S. Reliance Way for a welfare-check call on Saturday, Feb. 28, and found an adult with a gunshot wound. The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Family members told reporters the shooting happened on a neighbor’s doorstep after an altercation, and they say the neighbor is claiming it was an accident. Police have released limited details so far and have not announced arrests or charges as of early Sunday.

2) Teen arrested over alleged threats toward Dobson High and a mosque

Authorities say a 15-year-old student was arrested after investigators traced online threats that referenced a mass shooting at his school and at a mosque. Police said they were alerted by the FBI on Feb. 18 and located the teen soon after.

Investigators said the threats were racially motivated and aimed at Hispanic students. Police said searches of two homes tied to the teen turned up items that matched what was shown online, along with tactical gear, a tomahawk, and extremist-related materials. The teen was booked on suspicion of making a terroristic threat and was taken to juvenile detention.

3) Mesa Public Schools approves elimination of 50 positions

Mesa Public Schools says 50 positions will be eliminated in May as part of a planned reduction in force, citing declining enrollment and the funding pressures that come with it. Reported cuts include roles such as behavioral specialists and instructional coaches.

At a recent governing board meeting, a teacher criticized how employees were notified and urged clearer communication and support during the process. The district said the last day for affected employees is May 22.
