Mesa Daily Local Brief: Traffic, downtown plans, solar shade, and a new hotel
Mesa, AZ – February 27, 2026 – Downtown ASU tower talks, a new hotel at Mesa Gateway, and weekend Loop 202 closures for East Valley drivers.
Good evening, Mesa. Here are the local headlines with the biggest day-to-day impact, pulled from the last few days of updates and announcements.
Weekend traffic: Loop 202 closure near Mesa’s east side
State transportation officials are warning East Valley drivers to plan ahead this weekend. Eastbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) is scheduled to close between Lindsay Road and Val Vista Drive from 10 p.m. Friday to noon Sunday, March 1, for paving tied to a widening project. If you normally use that stretch to get across the Valley, detours are expected to push more cars onto surface streets and the US 60.
Downtown Mesa: concept for an ASU tech building and new tower
City leaders are floating an early-stage concept aimed at pulling more students, startups and foot traffic into downtown. The proposal includes a city-backed tech-focused building for Arizona State University, an eight-story mixed-use tower, and a lighted, shaded pedestrian ‘light walk’ intended to better connect key downtown destinations. It’s still conceptual, with funding and formal approvals ahead before anything can move from drawings to construction.
City facilities: new solar carports add megawatts and shade
Mesa’s push for locally generated power got a new milestone as SOLON and Onyx Renewables completed four additional solar PV carport projects for city facilities, totaling 2.9 MW. The systems were finished and connected to Mesa’s electric utility in December, bringing the partnership’s total operating solar capacity for the city to about 3.7 MW. Beyond the energy, the carports add more than 600 shaded parking spaces at municipal sites.
Mesa Gateway area: SpringHill Suites hotel breaks ground
A new hotel is coming into focus near Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. A five-story SpringHill Suites has broken ground in the Gateway East development, with 127 suites aimed at serving airport passengers, visitors to the Arizona Athletic Grounds sports complex and future business tenants nearby. Plans highlighted include a lobby bar, outdoor pool and fitness center, plus typical extended-stay conveniences.
