Middletown Daily Brief: Drone Trial Approved, Health Grants Open, Weekend Events Underway
Middletown, CT — February 6, 2026 — City leaders approved a trial police drone program, health grants opened, and weekend library events begin.
Public Safety
Middletown leaders have approved a 90-day pilot program testing a new first-responder drone system designed to help police and fire crews assess emergencies faster. The drone can be deployed automatically when a 911 call comes in, giving supervisors a live aerial view before crews arrive on scene.
City officials say the goal is better situational awareness during fires, crashes, and large incidents downtown and near major infrastructure. The trial will help determine whether the system becomes a permanent tool later this year, with privacy limits built into how footage is stored.
Health & City Services
The Middletown Health Department is now accepting applications for its latest round of public health block grants. Local nonprofits and community groups that provide direct health-related services to residents are eligible to apply.
City staff say the funding is intended to support programs addressing prevention, education, and access to care, particularly for underserved populations. Applications opened in late January and will be reviewed on a rolling basis until funds are allocated.
Community & Events
This weekend brings several family-friendly and educational events across the city. Russell Library is hosting a community meet-and-greet with the Friends of the Library on Saturday, while children’s programming and movement-based activities are scheduled throughout the day Friday.
City calendars also show ongoing virtual author talks and local organization meetups as Middletown continues a busy winter schedule of indoor events.
Looking Ahead
Residents can expect updates in the coming weeks on the drone pilot’s early results, additional grant opportunities, and more winter programming as February unfolds.
