Midland Daily Brief: Growth Plans, Community Projects, and Upcoming Events
Midland, TX — February 6, 2026 — A quick look at city news including road work, energy updates, public safety notes, and community events shaping Midland today.
New housing development advances in north Midland
A large residential project is moving closer to reality on the north side of town. A local developer is proposing a 385-lot housing development on nearly 188 acres near North Garfield Street. The plan recently received a favorable recommendation from the city’s planning and zoning commission and now heads to city council for final consideration.
The project reflects continued growth pressure in north Midland, where new neighborhoods have been steadily expanding to meet housing demand tied to the regional economy.
Industrial land project heads to city council
On the west side of Midland, a 19-acre industrial development is also advancing through the approval process. The proposal would divide the property into five industrial lots, adding new space for businesses that support energy and logistics operations in the area.
Planning officials have recommended approval, and the project is expected to come before city council in the coming weeks.
Downtown YMCA plans new indoor aquatic center
The Midland YMCA has launched a major fundraising campaign aimed at building a modern indoor aquatic center downtown. The effort is backed by a significant early donation that helps kick-start plans to replace the aging pool with a more accessible, family-focused facility.
The project would relocate the pool to the first floor and add features designed for all ages, along with expanded gathering spaces.
West Texas Business Expo returns later this month
Local business owners and entrepreneurs can mark their calendars for February 19, when the West Texas Business Expo returns to Midland for the first time in years. The free event will bring together dozens of exhibitors from energy, finance, technology, and other industries at the convention center.
Organizers say the goal is to strengthen local connections and showcase the region’s growing business community.
