Milwaukee’s Black History Month Celebrations and Community Events
Milwaukee, WI — February 3, 2026 — Milwaukee honors Black History Month with community events, a rhino’s early spring forecast, and a healthcare contract issue.
Black History Month Celebrations
Milwaukee is embracing Black History Month with a series of events highlighting Black culture and contributions. WISN 12 is spotlighting local businesses, such as JCP Construction, a minority-owned company marking 18 years in the city. Mayor Johnson has also honored community members for their impact during this month of recognition.
Kianga’s Early Spring Forecast
At the Milwaukee County Zoo, Kianga, the eastern black rhino, predicted an early spring on Groundhog Day by forecasting cloudy skies. This tradition continues after the passing of Gordy the Groundhog in 2023, with different animals making the annual prediction each year.
Healthcare Contract Expiration
Milwaukee County is addressing an expired healthcare contract with UnitedHealthcare. The issue arose due to an oversight by the Department of Human Resources, leading to the contract’s expiration at the end of 2025. County Executive David Crowley has urged the Board of Supervisors to approve a new five-year contract to ensure continued healthcare coverage for employees and their families. An audit of the Department of Human Resources is also being considered to prevent future errors.
Upcoming Community Events
Several community events are scheduled for the week of February 2. These include a Family Culture Night at the Gerald L. Ignace Indian Health Center, focusing on Bear Bundle teachings, and an exploration of Milwaukee’s African American civil servant archives at the Central Library. Additionally, a Valentine’s Day story time party is planned at Rescued Roasters, featuring crafts, stories, and music for children.
