Mayor Mamdani Appoints Stanley Richards as New DOC Commissioner
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has appointed Stanley Richards as the new commissioner of the New York City Department of Correction, making him the first formerly incarcerated person to lead the city’s jail system. Richards, president of the Fortune Society, previously served as a top deputy during the Rikers Island staffing crisis. He assumes office as a federal remediation manager takes broad authority over Rikers, amid ongoing tensions with the correction officers’ union.
Jamaica Colosseum Mall Closes After 40 Years
The Jamaica Colosseum Mall in Queens has closed its doors after more than four decades as a neighborhood and cultural landmark. Opened in 1984, the mall housed small businesses and played a role in hip-hop history. Its closure leaves a void as redevelopment looms under the city’s Jamaica Neighborhood Plan.

Officers responding to a 911 call found the remains inside a NYCHA complex in Bushwick. Authorities have not disclosed how long the woman had been deceased.
