An overnight fire at a beloved waterfront inn tops today’s news, while downtown and mansion district events keep the city buzzing this winter weekend.

Castle Hill Inn fire under investigation

Firefighters from Newport and surrounding communities spent hours battling a five-alarm blaze at Castle Hill Inn late Thursday night on Ocean Avenue.

Officials say the fire started in the upper floors and roof area, sending flames through the historic hotel’s rear section. All guests and staff were safely evacuated, and no injuries have been reported.

Crews from several neighboring towns assisted as winds and freezing temperatures complicated the response. Damage assessments and the cause of the fire are still being evaluated, but the inn’s ownership has publicly thanked first responders and promised updates on restoration plans.

Area 61 convention fills local hotel rooms

Hundreds of visitors are in town for the Area 61 recovery convention at the Newport Marriott, running February 6–8. The gathering marks the convention’s return to Newport and is drawing attendees from across Rhode Island and neighboring states.

Organizers say heavy snow earlier in the week has tightened parking near the municipal garage, but downtown hotels and restaurants are benefiting from a welcome midwinter boost in business.

Mansions launch new exhibit tours

Rosecliff is debuting “Full Circle,” a contemporary sculpture and design exhibition that revisits a landmark 1970s outdoor art show in the city.

Members-only tours begin today, with guides highlighting how new installations interact with historic Gilded Age interiors. Additional public programming at Rosecliff and The Breakers is scheduled through the coming weeks, giving locals extra incentive to visit during the quieter season.

Downtown entertainment and shopping

On Thames Street, the Top of Pelham is hosting its dueling pianos show, offering late-night music and harbor views for visitors and residents. Advance tickets are recommended, but walk-ups may find space depending on turnout.

Closer to the waterfront, galleries and boutiques are leaning into Valentine’s Day, including a jewelry-focused event at a local fine art and design space, giving shoppers one more excuse to stroll the wharves despite the cold.
