North Platte Daily Brief: Commissioners, Council, and Big Weekend Events

County commissioners set Monday agenda

The Lincoln County Board of Commissioners will open the week with a full agenda on Monday, February 9, meeting at 9 a.m. in the courthouse. Members will take public comment, handle minutes, claims, fee reports, and briefly convene as the Board of Equalization to consider valuation corrections and refunds. They are also scheduled to take positions on several state bills, including two they plan to oppose and a housing reform measure they are expected to support. City council keeps projects moving

Earlier in the week, the North Platte City Council wrapped up one of its shortest meetings in recent years but still cleared a list of local decisions. Members confirmed a new appointment to the Library Advisory Board and renewed several terms on the Historical Preservation Commission, supporting efforts to protect key buildings downtown and in the Canteen District.

The council also renewed the license agreement that allows the seasonal ice rink to operate in Centennial Park, even after a run of warmer winter weather. Leaders signaled interest in exploring a more weather friendly location in the future. Council members also approved a professional services contract to update the city’s historic building survey, a step required by the state preservation office.

Tourism grants fuel 2026 events

The local tourism office has awarded just over forty nine thousand dollars in promotional grants to events planned across 2026, after reviewing nearly seventy thousand dollars in requests. Funded through lodging taxes on overnight stays, the grants will support pickleball and youth softball tournaments, a stock dog show, a youth basketball camp, the Miss Nebraska competition, trail maps, and an Indian National Finals Rodeo event expected to draw visitors from several states.

Big weekend for ag and pageant fans

North Platte’s agricultural community wrapped up the thirty fifth Buffalo Bill Farm and Ranch Expo on Thursday, closing a two day showcase at the D and N Event Center. The expo brought together farmers, ranchers, vendors, and local residents for demonstrations, equipment displays, and conversations about the year ahead.

This weekend also marks the Crowns for Gowns activities, with Miss America 2000 Heather French Henry in town for scholarship competitions, leadership workshops, and a women’s empowerment luncheon. Her visit puts an extra spotlight on the city’s role as host for state pageant events and adds another highlight to a busy early February calendar.
