Pipkin and Reed middle schools set to open Aug. 25 in Springfield
Springfield Public Schools has scheduled its new Pipkin and Reed middle schools to begin serving students Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026, giving families two new middle-school campuses and adding specialized programs to the district’s 2026-27 school year.
The district’s official back-to-school materials list both schools among its Tier Three campuses. Pipkin and Reed are scheduled to operate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The opening date is a planned start date, not evidence that either school has already opened. District materials confirm that the campuses have been incorporated into the coming school year’s operating schedule and back-to-school information.
Programs planned for the two campuses
Pipkin Middle School is assigned to house Springfield Public Schools’ International Baccalaureate middle-years program. Reed Middle School is assigned to house the Academy of Fine and Performing Arts.
The planned instructional space at Reed includes facilities for choir, band, orchestra, theater, art, recording and dance. Those programs give the new campus a specific academic and arts focus as the district prepares for the first day of classes.
The available materials do not establish final enrollment totals, attendance numbers or opening-day participation. They also do not say that admission or enrollment in either specialized program is guaranteed.
Part of a $220 million facilities program
Pipkin and Reed are two projects within Springfield Public Schools’ 2023 Proposition S facilities program. Springfield voters approved $220 million in general-obligation bonds for school improvements on April 4, 2023. The measure received 77.67% approval.
The bond program includes new construction for Pipkin and Reed, work connected to Pershing Middle School, and safety and storm-shelter projects across the district. District reporting says more than 50 facilities are receiving safety and security upgrades, while six elementary schools are planned to receive storm-shelter gymnasiums.
The scale of the bond program makes the August opening a student-facing milestone in a larger, multiyear construction effort. The district expects the broader Proposition S program to reach substantial completion around the end of 2028, so the two middle schools’ scheduled opening does not mark the end of the overall work.
Pershing work continues through 2028
Another major middle-school project is moving forward at the existing Pershing property. Springfield Public Schools held a groundbreaking ceremony July 9, 2026, for a new Pershing Middle School building.
The new Pershing facility will be constructed on the existing property while students continue learning in the original building. The district lists completion for the new facility in 2028.
Together, the scheduled Pipkin and Reed opening and the ongoing Pershing project show the different stages of the district’s facilities plan: two campuses are being prepared for students this school year, while additional construction and safety work will continue for more than two years.
For families assigned to Pipkin or Reed, the next confirmed milestone is the districtwide first day of school on Aug. 25. The district’s back-to-school materials also provide the campuses’ Tier Three operating hours, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
