Pompano Beach extends BSO policing contract for three years
Pompano Beach will continue using the Broward Sheriff’s Office for police services after the City Commission approved a three-year contract extension on July 14, 2026.
The decision keeps BSO as the city’s law-enforcement provider and postpones any immediate transition to a standalone Pompano Beach police department. The extension’s reported fiscal impact is approximately $71.9 million.

BSO remains the city’s police provider
Pompano Beach has contracted with BSO for police services since Aug. 1, 1999. The latest vote continues that relationship for another three years.
The arrangement places BSO at the center of the city’s policing model while commissioners consider whether Pompano Beach should eventually establish its own department. The contract extension gives the city a defined period in which sheriff’s personnel will remain responsible for law-enforcement services.
The reported $71.9 million fiscal impact is the amount associated with the extended contract. It should not be described as a savings or an increase without a comparison with the previous agreement. The public reporting on the action does not provide a detailed year-by-year payment schedule.
Police department debate continues

It keeps the existing provider in place while the broader policy question remains under consideration.
That distinction matters because a contract renewal and a decision to establish a municipal department would involve different choices for the city. The standalone-department debate concerns whether Pompano Beach should eventually take responsibility for operating its own police agency and how that option would compare with the current arrangement.
