Storm cleanup continues after early-morning tornado

Crews and neighbors are still cleaning up after strong storms and a confirmed tornado moved through Riverside and nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base early Friday. High winds damaged several buildings on base and knocked down trees and power lines in neighborhoods along and near Airway Road.

A shopping center at Airway and Woodman suffered broken glass and damage to storefronts, but no injuries were reported. Power companies and city crews have been working through the day to restore service, clear debris and reopen affected streets. Residents in the hardest-hit blocks off Spinning Road and Airway Road are being urged to document damage for insurance and stay alert for any remaining downed lines.

$1.5 million to reimagine the Woodman corridor

Even as the community recovers from the storms, Riverside officials say a new $1.5 million federal allocation will help make the city’s busiest traffic corridor safer and more attractive. The money will support design work on the Woodman Drive and Harshman Avenue corridor from U.S. 35 up to Springfield Street by the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.

The project aims to cut the number of crashes, including those that have pushed vehicles into the base security fence, and to add better sidewalks and space for people walking and biking. Local leaders say the new funding builds on earlier grants and city investments and will feed into a broader task force effort taking public input on how the three-mile stretch should look and function in the years ahead.

Schools mark community and career learning

Mad River Local Schools are leaning into community connection today with a Family and Community Celebration scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mad River Middle School. The event is set to use the gym, cafeteria and several classrooms for activities that showcase student work, school programs and local partners.

The celebration lands during both Career and Technical Education Month and Black History Month, which the district is highlighting across its calendar. After a stretch of winter-weather closures and delays in late January, there are no current schedule alerts posted for the district, and families can expect a full day of regular weekend activities around the city.
