Rochester Reports Historic Decline in Shootings in First Half of 2026

Rochester Mayor Malik D. Evans announced July 23 that the city recorded historic declines in shootings during the first half of 2026. The City of Rochester described the trend as part of a broader decline in crime incidents across the city.

The announcement provides a city-specific public-safety benchmark for the first six months of the year. It also gives Rochester officials and residents a basis for watching whether the decline continues through the rest of 2026.

A separate city Gun Trace Data Report, published June 3, adds context to Rochester’s public-safety challenges. The report said most crime guns recovered in Rochester came from outside New York State, while a significant portion were sourced within Monroe County.

The two updates point to both a local trend and a continuing regional dimension to gun violence. Rochester’s shooting numbers are moving downward according to the mayor’s announcement, but the gun-trace findings show that recovered firearms continue to come from multiple sources, including within Monroe County. City and Rochester Police Department reporting will remain the next public reference points as officials track shootings and broader crime incidents during the remainder of the year.
