ROTC Cadets Honored, Community Mourns After ODU Shooting
Norfolk, VA – March 25, 2026 – Norfolk honors fallen Lt. Col. Brandon Shah as ROTC cadets receive Purple Hearts and the ODU community gathers to mourn.
Norfolk continues to mourn and reflect following the March 12 shooting at Old Dominion University, as the campus and broader community mark new milestones in the days since the tragedy.
Cadets Recognized for Bravery
On March 24, two ODU Army ROTC cadets were awarded Purple Hearts for injuries they sustained while confronting the gunman inside Constant Hall. Six additional cadets received Meritorious Service Medals in recognition of their actions during the attack.
Military leaders said the cadets acted quickly, stepping in to stop the shooter and helping prevent further loss of life. The gunman was ultimately subdued during the confrontation. The awards ceremony underscored both the risks the students faced and the decisive response credited with limiting the scope of the violence.
Remembering Lt. Col. Brandon A. Shah
On March 22, hundreds gathered at Chartway Arena to honor Lt. Col. Brandon A. Shah, the ROTC instructor who was killed while protecting students. The memorial brought together elected officials, fellow service members, university leaders and community members.
Shah, a longtime Army officer and ODU faculty member, was remembered as a steady leader and dedicated mentor who put students first. Speakers described him as a protector in both title and action. He was posthumously awarded the Legion of Merit and a Purple Heart in recognition of his service and sacrifice.
Ongoing Campus Adjustments
Constant Hall remains closed for the rest of the spring semester as university leaders continue to shift classes to other locations. Students and staff are being supported through counseling services and other campus resources.
University officials say safety planning remains a priority. Reviews of campus security protocols are ongoing, and coordination with local and federal agencies continues as the investigation moves forward.
For many in Norfolk, the past two weeks have been marked by grief, gratitude and resolve — honoring those who acted with courage while focusing on healing across the ODU community.
