Weather: Snowy start, bitter cold to follow
Saco woke up under gray skies today as a coastal system pushed light, fluffy snow across York County. Forecasts call for a few inches in and around the city, enough to make roads slick.
The bigger story arrives tonight into Sunday morning, when an arctic front will send temperatures plunging toward zero with wind chills well below that. Residents are urged to bundle up, limit time outside, and check on neighbors who may need a hand.
Travel tonight and early Sunday could be slow, especially on untreated side streets. If you are heading out, give yourself extra time and clear snow completely from your vehicle.
Downtown: Valentine Cookie Walk fills Main Street
Downtown businesses leaned into the Valentine theme today with the sold out Cookie Walk, sending ticket holders on a sweet stroll through shops and eateries. Participants collected treats at each stop and helped support efforts to keep the downtown district vibrant.
Organizers say interest was strong again this year, a sign that residents and visitors are eager for simple winter events that bring people together between major storms.
Community: Breakfast at Thornton and new Saco Museum exhibit
This morningโs community breakfast at Thornton Academy brought families, alumni, and neighbors into the dining hall for pancakes and coffee, with proceeds benefiting the schoolโs student assistance fund. It was a warm, low key way to support local students as midwinter sets in.
Across town, the Saco Museum opened a new all ages exhibition, Cultivating Creativity, featuring work by art educators from across Maine. The show runs into late March and offers a colorful antidote to Februaryโs gray days.
The Dyer Library is also keeping cabin fever at bay with an ongoing plant swap in the childrenโs room throughout February, giving families a chance to trade cuttings and dream about spring.
Looking ahead
After the weekend cold snap, temperatures should gradually rebound next week, but winter is far from finished. For now, todayโs mix of snow, sweets, and community gatherings is a reminder that Saco knows how to make the most of a midwinter Saturday.
