Salem is waking up to howling winds, a full slate of events at the civic center, and big-time high school hoops as the Adam Ward Classic continues.

Weather alerts and a frigid start

The National Weather Service has a High Wind Warning in effect for the Roanoke Valley, including Salem, through 7 p.m. this evening, along with a Cold Weather Advisory lasting into Sunday morning. Northwest winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour with gusts that could approach 60 miles per hour are possible, which may bring down small limbs and cause spotty power interruptions. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, limit time outside in the wind, and check on neighbors, older adults, and pets as wind chills dip well below freezing.

Big night at the Salem Civic Center

After the Winterfest Beach Bash on Friday night and a rescheduled teacher job fair this morning, the Salem Civic Center caps a busy weekend with a sold-seat style country show. Parker McCollum brings his 2026 tour to town this evening, joined by openers Jake Worthington and Tyler Halverson for a 7:30 p.m. start. Doors are scheduled to open about an hour before the show. Concertgoers should plan extra time for parking and security and be ready for a cold walk across the lot with those high winds still whipping.

Adam Ward Classic packs Salem High gym

At Salem High School, the annual Adam Ward Classic returns this weekend with a full schedule of boys and girls basketball games spread across Friday and Saturday. The event, created in 2016 to honor Salem alumnus and photojournalist Adam Ward, has already helped raise more than one hundred thirty thousand dollars for a scholarship fund bearing his name. This year’s classic also supports Make-A-Wish and Special Olympics, turning the packed gym atmosphere into a fundraiser as much as a showcase for local teams. Tickets are ten dollars per day, with children under five admitted free, making it an accessible way for families to enjoy a day of hoops.

Also this week: math boost for elementary schools

Earlier this week, the Salem School Division announced it will receive just over two hundred three thousand dollars through a mathematics innovation grant from the Virginia Department of Education. The award will fund new tools, training, and curriculum support for grades K through 5 at all four elementary schools, focusing on data-driven instruction and closing skill gaps in early math. Combined with other recent state awards, Salem schools have now secured more than seven hundred thousand dollars in grants this winter, giving teachers added resources to support young learners.
