New music instruments headed to Angela G. Leal Elementary

A teacher at Angela G. Leal Elementary has secured a competitive grant from the Guitar Center Music Foundation, bringing in more than $6,000 in new instruments for students. The award will pay for classroom sets of ukuleles and keyboards, along with an accordion that reflects the community’s strong conjunto music roots.

The grant is the result of a months-long application and interview process led by music educator Nayelli Quiroga. Every student on campus is expected to benefit from the new equipment, giving children more chances to explore music and performance during the school day.

Passport Fair aims to make travel paperwork easier

Cameron County District Clerk Laura Perez-Reyes, in partnership with the City of San Benito, will host a Passport Fair on Saturday, February 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cameron County Annex on West Expressway 83. The event is open to anyone who needs to apply for a U.S. passport.

Organizers encourage residents to complete the DS-11 application form ahead of time and gather required documents to help keep lines moving. Appointments are available by phone or email, but walk-ins will also be welcome during the event.

San Benito Wetlands Park included in new state grant package

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has announced a record round of local park grants, and a wetlands project in San Benito is among the South Texas winners. The funding is expected to support habitat restoration and visitor amenities such as trails, bird blinds, and picnic areas, strengthening the city’s growing ecotourism efforts.

Regional projects in nearby communities will also see upgrades to waterfronts, sports facilities, and nature spaces, which could draw more visitors to the Valley as a whole.

School mini break and upcoming Greyhounds action

Students and staff in San Benito CISD remain on a February mini break through Monday, giving families a long weekend before classes resume. District calendars also highlight a busy stretch of athletics as basketball season continues.

The San Benito High School Greyhounds boys and girls basketball teams are scheduled to face Harlingen on Tuesday evening, with games set for 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Fans heading to the matchup can use the extra day off to plan travel and tickets.
