Santa Ana moves to block rent-setting algorithms
Santa Ana’s City Council has voted to prohibit the sale and use of certain rent-setting software that relies on nonpublic competitor data to recommend or set residential rents. Supporters say the goal is to reduce anticompetitive pricing pressure and keep rent hikes from being driven by coordinated data tools, not local realities.
The ordinance includes tenant-driven enforcement and potential civil penalties that can reach $1,000 per violation. A final vote is scheduled for March 3.
Auto-theft suspect from Santa Ana dies in custody
County officials reported that a 24-year-old man booked on vehicle-theft-related charges by Santa Ana police was found unresponsive while housed at the Theo Lacy Facility on Sunday, Feb. 22. Deputies and medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures before he was pronounced dead.
Authorities said there were no suspicious circumstances in the preliminary information released, and that an independent autopsy and toxicology testing will determine the cause of death.
$6.6 million headed to traffic-signal upgrades and faster bus trips
Santa Ana is slated for a pair of mobility projects aimed at smoothing traffic and improving transit reliability. Plans include advanced signal synchronization across a 15-mile corridor with 61 intersections shared by multiple cities, plus a pilot that gives buses priority at 19 intersections along McFadden Avenue to support OCTA’s Line 66.
The work is expected to modernize signal equipment and communications, refine timing plans, and test a cloud-based system that can improve bus on-time performance without heavily disrupting general traffic flow.
